Prospective Majors
Prerequisites
Before entering the department, economics majors must complete, on a graded basis, prerequisite courses in Introductory Microeconomics, Introductory Macroeconomics, Statistics, and Multivariable Calculus before the start of their junior year. All prerequisite courses must be taken on a graded basis (no P/D/F option). A summer course or a Study Abroad course can only be used to fulfill a prerequisite if it is preapproved by the relevant department’s Director of Undergraduate Studies.
Preapproval of Summer Courses
The Economics Department only pre-approves transfer credit for either an ECO 100 (Introductory Microeconomics) or an ECO 101 (Introductory Macroeconomics) equivalent summer course offered by an accredited university. We do not approve summer course transfer credit for ECO 202 (Statistics) or for any 300 or higher level economics course.
Major declaration checklist
Before you declare your major, double-check you’ve met all the pre-requirements.
Process for declaring an economics major
Sophomores who meet our prerequisites can join the Economics Department during the Majors Declaration period. There are three steps:
- Declare “Economics” as your intended major on the Registrar’s website between 03/28/24 and 4/15/24.
- Complete your Departmental Academic Planning Form (DAPF) on TigerHub between 03/28/24 and 04/11/24.
Notes:
Juniors must complete ECO 302/312 by the end of junior Fall term and ECO 300/310 and ECO 301/311 by end of junior Spring term.
Students should keep both Monday and Wednesday 3:00 – 4:20 p.m. time slots free for Junior Independent Work (JIW) meetings in the Fall. The ECO department will review and electronically approve your DAPF by 04/16/24. You only need to meet with the department if you have unresolved questions about your Economics course selection.
- Enroll in Fall 2024 courses on TigerHub on 04/17/24.
