2026-2027 postdoctoral research associates and research fellows

As we enter the new academic year, the Economics Department welcomes eight postdoctoral research associates and fellows to campus. We also have three new faculty members–Matias Cattaneo, Will Dobbie, and Elena Manresa–who we are proud to officially welcome to the department.

From international trade to experimental economics, this year’s visitors’ work and expertise span a wide range of issues and topics. Learn more about each of them below–and make sure to say hi when you see them in the halls!


2026-2027 Postdocs and Research Fellows

Deniz Atalar

Postdoctoral Research Associate, International Economics Section

Deniz Atalar is a macroeconomist who studies international trade and firm dynamics. She is spending the 2026-2027 academic year with the International Economics Section. Starting in July 2027, she will join the Department of Economics at the University of Texas at Austin as an Assistant Professor. Atalar earned a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Cambridge in 2026.

Tianyu Fan

Postdoctoral Research Associate, Louis A. Simpson Center for the Study of Macroeconomics

Tianyu Fan's research spans macroeconomics, political economy, and international economics. Fan is spending the 2026-2027 academic year with the Louis A. Simpson Center for the Study of Macroeconomics. Following the academic year, he’ll join the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) as an Assistant Professor of Economics. Fan earned a Ph.D. in Economics from Yale University in 2026.

Juliana Gamboa Arbalaez

Juliana Gamboa-Arbelaez studies trade and macroeconomics. Gamboa-Arbelaez is spending the 2026-2027 academic year with the International Economics Section. Starting in July 2027, she’ll join the University of Queensland. Gamboa-Arbelaez earned a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Minnesota in 2026.

David Hémous’s research interests include economic growth, innovation, international trade, income inequality, and environmental economics. Hémous is the UBS Foundation Professor of Economics of Innovation and Entrepreneurship at the University of Zurich. He will be spending the 2026-2027 academic year as a Kenen Fellow with the International Economics Section. Hémous completed a Ph.D. in Economics at Harvard University in 2012.

Tatjana Kleineberg

Tatjana Kleineberg’s research lies at the intersection of macroeconomics, spatial economics, and economic development. Kleineberg is an economist in the Macroeconomics and Growth team of the World Bank’s Research Department. She will be spending the 2026-2027 academic year as a Kenen Fellow with the International Economics Section. Kleineberg earned her Ph.D. in Economics from Yale University in 2019.

Emanuel Ornelas

Emanuel Ornelas’s research interests include international trade, trade policy, political economy, and theories of the firm. Ornelas is a professor at the São Paulo School of Economics. He will be spending the 2026-2027 academic year as a Kenen Fellow with the International Economics Section. Ornelas received his Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2002.

Po Hyun Sung

Postdoctoral Research Associate, Experimental Economics Group

Po Hyun Sung studies economic theory and experimental economics, with a focus on stochastic choice foundations and decisions under uncertainty. Sung is spending the 2026-2027 academic year with the Experimental Economics Group. Sung received her Ph.D. in Economics from the California Institute of Technology in 2026.

Jacob Wright

Jacob Wright

Postdoctoral Research Associate, International Economics Section

Jacob Wright’s research examines quantitative and empirical approaches to macro labor, spatial economics, and education economics. Wright is spending the 2026-2027 academic year with the International Economics Section before joining the University of Queensland in July 2027. Wright earned his Ph.D. in economics from the University of Minnesota in 2026.
