50 Years of Index Investing

Marking the 50th anniversary edition of his famous book, A Random Walk Down Wall Street, JRCPPF faculty affiliate Burton Malkiel recently gave an interview with the New York Times. Published in 1973, when Malkiel was a Princeton economics professor, the book argued index investing as the best strategy for long-term returns over trying to pick individual stocks. Based on contemporary academic research on market efficiency, asset pricing, and portfolio theory, Malkiel’s book helped translate this research for a general audience. Now in its 13th edition, A Random Walk Down Wall Street has sold close to two million copies. Read the full interview by The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal.

In honor of the 50th-anniversary, Princeton’s GCEPS, BCF, and JRCPPF are hosting a virtual book talk with Malkiel on January 24, 2023, from 1 to 2 p.m. Learn more about the virtual event here, and register here to attend.
