I investigate the consequences of recent consolidation in animal agriculture in the United States through two main levels of analysis. First, I use county-level variation in exposure to industrializing agricultural sectors and find that more-exposed counties see greater drops in agricultural employment share. Second, I introduce an administrative panel dataset of MN feedlots, and propose empirical strategies that exploit this dataset’s granularity to observe how local economic conditions respond to the opening and closing of feedlots and meatpacking plants.
